Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness in people over 50 in developed countries. It is a multifactorial disease resulting from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors, and the age is the only worldwide admitted risk factor. The socioeconomic impact of the disease reaches enormous proportions, if we take into account the high cost of the available antiangiogenic therapy, the strict schedule of medical visits that it requires, and the impairment that it gives rise to. The response to treatment and the visual outcomes improve with early management of the retinal lesions, thus the early diagnosis of the disease in its initial phases, based on self-control with an Amsler grid and with regular ophthalmologic assessments, is essential. 相似文献

Successful scaling up of Solid Substrate Cultivation (SSC) bioreactors has been hampered by the lack of reliable models that describe such processes satisfactorily. Even though experimental data may be available for model development, data analysis is hindered by system heterogeneity and noisy measurements. This work presents a data processing procedure for periodically agitated SSC fixed bed reactors. The procedure considers several steps. First, all measurements were pre-processed on-line during the cultivation using a low pass fourth order Butterworth digital filter. Then, using this pre-processed data, the average bed temperature, evaporation rate, removed heat, and CO2 production rate were computed off-line. The variables used to compute the evaporation rate and the removed heat were smoothed off-line with a peak shaving algorithm and a non-delay inducing forward/backward moving average scheme. Variables associated with biomass growth (CO2 and metabolic heat) are known to evolve slowly. Hence, these were reprocessed with a smoothing procedure in order to diminish the effects of bioreactor heterogeneity. Here, moving average smoothing was applied using a larger window than for other variables, and determined empirically in order to smooth the pre-processed data and extract its real trend. The whole procedure was assessed with data from a 200 kg capacity SSC bioreactor in the cultivation of a filamentous fungus (Gibberella fujikuroi) on wheat bran. 相似文献

Bradyrhizobium japonicum cytochrome c(550), encoded by cycA, has been previously suggested to play a role in denitrification, the respiratory reduction of nitrate to dinitrogen. However, the exact role of this cytochrome in the denitrification process is unknown. This study shows that cytochrome c(550) is involved in electron transfer to the copper-containing nitrite reductase of B. japonicum, as revealed by the inability of a cycA mutant strain to consume nitrite and, consequently, to grow under denitrifying conditions with nitrite as the electron acceptor. Mutation of cycA had no apparent effect on methylviologen-dependent nitrite reductase activity. However, succinate-dependent nitrite reduction was largely inhibited, suggesting that c(550) is the in vivo electron donor to copper-containing nitrite reductase. In addition, this study demonstrates that a cytochrome c(550) mutation has a negative effect on expression of the periplasmic nitrate reductase. This phenotype can be rescued by extending the growth period of the cells. A model is proposed whereby a mutation in cycA reduces expression of the cbb(3)-type oxidase, affecting oxygen consumption rate by the cells and consequently preventing maximal expression of the periplasmic nitrate reductase during the first days of the growth period. 相似文献

While the static magnitude of thermal pain perception has been shown to follow a power-law function of the temperature, its dynamical features have been largely overlooked. Due to the slow temporal experience of pain, multiple studies now show that the time evolution of its magnitude can be captured with continuous online ratings. Here we use such ratings to model quantitatively the temporal dynamics of thermal pain perception. We show that a differential equation captures the details of the temporal evolution in pain ratings in individual subjects for different stimulus pattern complexities, and also demonstrates strong predictive power to infer pain ratings, including readouts based only on brain functional images. 相似文献

Background
Breast milk is an important source of staphylococci and other bacterial groups to the infant gut. The objective of this work was to analyse the bacterial diversity in feces of breast-fed infants and to compare it with that of formula-fed ones. A total of 23 women and their respective infants (16 breast-fed and 7 formula-fed) participated in the study. The 16 women and their infants provided a sample of breast milk and feces, respectively, at days 7, 14, and 35. The samples were plated onto different culture media. Although structurally similar to the natural plant hormone indol-3- acetic acid, auxin herbicides were developed for purposes other than growth, and have been successfully used in agriculture for the last 60 years. Concerted efforts are being made to understand and decipher the precise mechanism of action of IAA and synthetic auxins. Innumerable results need to be interconnected to resolve the puzzle of auxin biology and action mode of auxin herbicides. To date, different breakthroughs are providing more insights into the process of plant-herbicide interactions.
